The short flexible section connecting your dryer to the wall vent — the transition hose — gets far less attention than the rest of the vent system, but it’s one of the most common places we find problems. Here’s what to actually use, and what to avoid.
The Short Answer
Use semi-rigid, corrugated metal transition hose. It’s the material that best balances flexibility (you need to be able to push the dryer back against the wall) with safety and airflow performance, and it’s what most current building codes either require or strongly favor.
What to Avoid
Vinyl or Plastic Accordion Hose
This white, ridged plastic hose was common for decades and is still sold in some stores — but it’s flammable, and its deep accordion ridges are exceptionally good at trapping lint. Many local codes now prohibit it outright for dryer exhaust use. If your dryer currently connects with plastic hose, replacing it should be a priority, not a someday project.
Foil Duct Tape “Repairs”
If your existing hose has a tear or loose connection, foil tape is a temporary patch at best. It doesn’t restore proper airflow and tends to peel from heat and vibration over time, sending lint into the gap it was meant to seal.
Why Metal Wins
- Fire safety — noncombustible, unlike vinyl or plastic
- Smoother interior surface — corrugated metal traps meaningfully less lint than deep-ridged plastic accordion hose
- Heat tolerance — handles the heat directly at the dryer’s exhaust port without degrading
- Code compliance — the material most current residential codes call for or recommend
Getting the Length Right
Longer isn’t safer — it’s the opposite. The transition hose should be the shortest practical length to reach from the dryer to the wall connection, run as straight as possible with minimal slack. Excess hose bunched up behind the dryer creates extra folds where lint collects and airflow slows down.
The Crushed-Hose Problem
Even the right hose material fails if the dryer gets pushed back too far and pins it flat against the wall. A crushed transition hose behaves like a clog regardless of what it’s made of — airflow drops, dry times climb, and lint has nowhere to go but back into the hose itself.
If your laundry space is tight and this keeps happening no matter how carefully you position the dryer, a dryer box solves the problem permanently by recessing the connection into the wall, so the dryer can sit flush without pinching anything.
