Most homes should have their dryer vent cleaned once a year — every six months if you have a long or winding vent run, heavy dryer use, pets, or a gas dryer.
“Once a year” is the answer most people expect — and for a lot of homes, it’s close to right. But the real answer depends on a handful of factors specific to your house and how you use your dryer. Here’s how to figure out where you actually fall.
The Factors That Actually Matter
1. Vent Length and Number of Turns
Every foot of duct and every elbow gives lint another place to slow down and collect. A short, straight run from the dryer to an exterior wall clogs far more slowly than a long run through an attic with several 90-degree turns. If your layout is on the longer or more winding side, lean toward cleaning every six months instead of yearly.
2. How Many Loads You Run
A household of two running a few loads a week has very different buildup than a family of six running a load a day. More loads means more lint moving through the system, plain and simple.
3. Pets in the House
Pet hair behaves differently than fabric lint — it tends to be finer and can mat more easily inside the duct. Homes with shedding dogs or cats, especially if pet bedding gets washed regularly, typically need more frequent service.
4. Gas vs. Electric Dryers
Gas dryers add a layer of urgency beyond drying performance. A restricted vent on a gas dryer can affect combustion and, in rare but serious cases, contribute to carbon monoxide accumulating indoors instead of venting outside. If you have a gas dryer, don’t stretch the interval to save a visit.
5. Vent Material and Age
Older homes sometimes still have flexible plastic or foil ducting, which sags, kinks, and traps lint far more than smooth rigid metal duct. If you haven’t confirmed what your vent is made of, that’s worth checking during your next cleaning.
Signs You Shouldn’t Wait for the Calendar
Regardless of schedule, get it looked at sooner if you notice:
- Drying times creeping up — two cycles to dry what used to take one
- The dryer or laundry room feeling noticeably hotter than usual
- A burning or hot dust smell during operation
- Visibly little or no airflow at the exterior vent hood when the dryer is running
- Excess lint around the dryer or lint trap area between loads
